'Goodwill gesture' from Tesco

A few weeks ago the hard drive on my Thomson PVR stopped working.

The box was 3 weeks outside the 12 month guarantee, but I contacted Tesco as the Sale of Goods Act states a guarantee is in addition to your statutory rights, particularly with regard to the fact that an item should last a reasonable length of time.

They have replied and agree with me, but have only offered £50 to reimburse me for the intrinsic value, as 'products like these decrease in value over time'. The unit cost me £97.87.

Is this a fair offer, considering the item has only lasted me just short of 13 months?

Tesco's offer seems fair.
They could examine the article, and make you pay the cost of the examination (which they would have to refund if the fault turned out to be inherrent - which is not guaranteed).
You would be unlikely to want to pay this cost on the chance of a positive result !

And the law does allow Tescos to take off an amount for actual use.

Unless you can discover that the fault was caused by an inherent fault, in which case Tescos will have to repay your costs for sure, I would accept.
