What is the warranty under UK Sale of Goods Act?

Hi - I bought a Hotpoint washing machine from Comet on 14 Oct 2008. On 14 Oct 2009 Comet wrote to me telling me the manufacturer's guarantee was about to expire. I believed it, and signed up to pay £10 per month to Domestic & General for an extended warranty for two years.

My machine has now broken, and it will not be 2 years old until Oct 2010. I have now been told that under the UK Sale of Goods Act I have a 2 year warranty, and maybe up to 6 years, do I needn't have paid £10 per month for the last year.

I have spoken to Comet this morning and asked why was I sent this letter, as in effect I have paid £110 for the last year that under law I needn't have paid. They told me that the UK decided to opt out of the Sale of Goods Act so that does not apply, and bascially my machine would have been out of warranty last Oct.

Can anyone help me?

Thank you
