On 1 October the National Consumer Council (including the Scottish and Welsh Consumer Councils), energywatch and Postwatch were merged to create Consumer Focus. They have 170 staff and have powers to investigate consumer complaints, conduct research and make "super-complaints" about failing services.

We will see how well Consumer Focus works in the next few months, but I wonder if there is likely to be a gap in consumer protection while this new body gets up and running? Perhaps they should have run concurrently with the old bodies for a while.

This is good news for tax payers. There are so many public funded consumer bodies, it must be more efficient to have just one. I personally, would like to see more consolidation as a consumer of consumer organisations. :)

The concern of many is that some issues won't be a priority and will lose visibility e.g. the Postwatch mandate. Ed Mayo the CEO of Consumer Focus has started a blog. You can wish them good luck here:

BTW GG Any organisation can apply to the Home Secretary to be able to make "super complaints" on behalf of consumers.
