Cancelling a flight booked online

I booked a flight on Expedia two days ago and it now seems I won't be able to make it. When I came to check the refund policy I noticed it says the fare is non-refundable.

Can this really be true? In this day and age, you can spend over £1,000 on a flight with a reputable website and cannot get a penny of it back if you need to cancel? Do the distance selling regulations not cover flights? And if not, can I get the money back via the credit card company I paid through?

Any advice welcomed on this...

Cheers,
benj.
