software refund advice.

Hi,
could you help with an issue i,m having about software refund.
I bought a laptop and software from well known high street retailer, I loaded the software and activated it.
Two weeks later the computer went faulty,so i uninstalled the software and returned the computer,i was offered a replacement or a refund.
I took the refund as they where unable to offer an equivelant spec computer.
But when asked about the software refund ,they firmly said we do not give refunds on software unless its faulty.
I have returned to the retailer again tonight to speak with the manager,and they now have said i can get a refund as long as i can prove that the disc still has a 2 user licence intact.
This i found out is impossible to get as the global software firm will not commit in writing that the disc still has 2 user licence.

Any ideas on where i stand.
