There is a useful article on the Motley Fool website about ways in which cars can be (expensively) affected by cold weather.

In particular, it introduced me to the phenomenon of "frosting" - the practice of opportunistic thieves looking for cars which have been left with the engine running to defrost the windscreen. Personally, I'm far too paranoid to leave my car unlocked with the keys in, but apparently 66,000 people have their cars stolen in this way every year.
