Cancelled hotel reservation

On Thursday evening 25 September at about 11.30pm I booked a hotelroom over the phone for Friday and Saturday 25/27 September. First thing in the morning I had to cancel that reservation. They now charged my card for 2 nights, because I cancelled it within 48 hours. I argued with them that I booked it within less than 24 hours, so it would not be possible to cancel the room at least 48 hours in advance. When I booked the room they never mentioned the 48hour policy and neither when I cancelled. Are they still allowed to take the money out of my bank account (for 2 nights) or can I demand it back?
