Why can't I get a mobile contract??

Nearly 6 and a half years ago I made a part settlement of a debt of about £1000 - the debt company let me off about £300.

I had expected after 6 years that I'd be able to get credit again since I've had not so much as a bank charge ever since my account defaulted over 6 years ago, but I'm still being refused a sim only contract with o2 and a savings account with the co-op. I have however had a couple of credit cards which I keep way below the limit and always pay on time.

I thought I'd be free of this black-mark after 6 years and my credit file says it is as it's not showing anymore, yet I'm still getting refused for a phone contract. I'm also concerned as I want to get a mortgage soon.

There is no evidence of anything negative on Experion and i'm registered on the electoral role.

Can anyone give me any advice on this please?

Could it be that as the co-op and O2 were companies I applied to when the default was on my credit file, that these companies are refusing based on the fact that they refused me before?
