The BBC is reporting that almost 50 cattle herds across Ireland have been given contaminated feed, which has sparked a scare over pork products. Three cattle herds have tested positive for dioxins, but the Food Standards Agency says that Irish pork is completely safe.

Interesting story running alongside this I spotted in the Observer. Supermarkets are putting plans in place to cover for suppliers who go bust (due to the credit crunch or events like this). They are genuinely concerned that there will be shortages and that the supply chain may fail because smaller suppliers are struggling. This pork issue is the last thing these companies need.

Apparently the Woolworths issue had a similar effect on a lot of suppliers. I believe that Zizzi got all their CDs etc delivered by Woollies, so were suddenly left without product in the weeks before Christmas. It makes sense to have contingency plans in place, though it's a sad reflection of the uncertain times we're living in.
