I bought a faulty product from a trade stand using my credit card,
contacted the company,
was totally ignored,
followed advice to put in writing,
no response,
put claim in through my credit card company,
submitted claim,
received refund 3 months ago,
just been recharged by credit company!?

can they do that??

My immediate response would be that it is a mistake. Have you tried calling them?

havent contacted them yet, wanted to be sure of my position.
when they gave me the refund they did state in the letter that they were relying on the 'good will' of the company and may have to charge me at a later date. but my understanding was that the recovery of the money was down to them?

Absolutely, it is their problem. Under the Consumer Credit Act it is as if you bought faulty goods from them - they are equally liable.
