Interesting that the vast majority of the the reader recommendations in this month's Good Housekeeping poll of beauty products cost less than the magazine's recommendations.
It has long been proven that expensive lotions and potions don't do any more for the skin than moderately priced creams.
I have just started making my own creams, with base ingredients like cocoa butter, that cost little - then I add herbs or flowers from my own garden or economical essential oils, (not Sandalwood Ha! Ha! - Apprentice watchers) readers, reaching for the Nivea for less than £5.00 is just as good as coughing up £100 for Creme de la Mer.
Somehow we have to get ourselves out of the trap of thinking we need to 'treat' ourselves by giving all our hard earned dosh over to multi-nationals who specialise in brainwashing! Smell some Jasmine oil and see if that doesn't transport you to paradise!

Oh I dont know G, I make my own skincreams but I do love a new lippie. Did you know that historically cosmetics firms are one of the few to do well in recession? Women wont fork out for big items but like the feeling of "little luxury" that a new beauty treat can bring. Also as someone who works for a makeup firm, actually mid priced products are the better buy. There arent enough of the good ingredients in very cheap products and the expensive ones are just a waste but the mid range products have a good concentration of active ingredients and tend to be kinder to the skin.

Yes, I did read that Lipstick never suffers in a recession! I am not sure I would ever go down the beetroot and vaseline route myself! I do enjoy mixing up the potions and lotions, and I think we have gone a bit overboard in our demands for the new and the luxurious - everything these days seems to be 'best of', or 'luxury', without us ever considering what makes it so. Sometimes it is simply the packaging, so 'The Emperor's New Clothes' comes to mind.
