Does anybody know how do you tell if a railway sleeper has tar inside? There sometimes seems to be no way to tell from the outside appearance. I've heard that a sleeper that contains tar would be heavier that a sleeper that doesn't (obvious I suppose), but I can't start weighing sleepers. I would love to strip a couple down and use them for shelving in my house.

I couple of years back I used two railway sleepers in my garden. They looked brilliant, though it wasn't until a couple of months after they were laid when the sun hit them that tar started to seep out of one of them and it had to be taken out.

Thanks for that Georgina. There sleeper prices are certainly reasonable at £12.50 each (though I haven't checked out their delivery charges yet). The last two sleepers I brought from a local yard cost me £17 each, and as I said, one of them turned out to be useless.
