Instant messaging increases malware threat

A new report has revealed that an increasing number of instant messages (IM) contain links to malware.

The British Computer Society's website reports that the latest MessageLabs Intelligence report showed that during June one in every 78 messages presents a security risk as they contain links to harmful websites.

 

Further findings revealed that approximately one in 405 instant messages were found to contain a hyperlink of some form.

 

MessageLabs used these figures to predict that one in 80 users of IMs may expect to receive a malicious IM on a monthly basis.

 

Paul Wood, MessageLabs Intelligence senior analyst, told Computer Weekly: 'The increase in IM - largely a result of Captcha breaking technology allowing bad guys to set up bogus accounts and direct victims to a malicious website - is a challenge that businesses need to get a grip on.'
