Passenger lifts and moving.

In our apartment block the lift has been making problems. The managing agent now says the problem is that people have been using the lift to move furniture in and out, which is true, and that "forces the doors".
The threat is that any future damage will be charged to a person who uses the lift to move any furniture, even if well within the weight limit of the lift.
That is not practical even in our place. In a high-rise block that would be a complete fiasco.
The real problem, I consider, is that the lift doors will try - very strongly - to shut even if there is something, or somebody, in their path.
Can anybody tell me where I can find out what safety devices should be working in a passener lift, to stop the doors trying to close if obstructed.
