Direct Debits and Lack of Control

Can I have another small rant please? I have just received a letter from my gas and electricity provider (Southern Electric) telling me that they're putting up my monthly direct debits by a considerable amount. This is just after I have had a discussion with them going over the costs and being happy that the Summer will equal out the Winter months and so, overall, I am paying them enough to cover the annual costs. So why do they do this? And how come they are allowed to? Obviously I don't read the small print when I agree to a DD but am I in effect saying that whoever I am paying my direct debit to has the right to hoik up the price whenever they see fit?
