There are many different power supplies which are needed to power the modern array of equipment and machines in a household.
There are a number of criteria which make those different from each other. Very basically: the voltage supplied and the current made available at that voltage.
It would be relatively easy to have a 'standard' supplier of power. However, all the manufacturers want their own profits - logically.
A simple solution would be a series of sockets which would correspond to the voltage and current required by each device. E.g. an 18v 2amp device would have a 3mm socket; a 24volt 1.5 amp device would have a 3.5mm socket.
It would then be simple for the power supplier manafacturers to make the applicable equipment which would supply the applicable range of devices.

It is not too far different from the getting away from the stupid idea that all Ford cars will be filled up at a Ford petrol station; GM cars all filled up at a GM petrol station, etc.

So how about comsumers: lets press for standard sockets for all devices, then standard suppliers for those sockets - it will be cheaper.

The european mobile phone manufacturers have recently agreed to standardise on the USB standard for chargers, part way there.
