I've lived in the countryside much of my life, though I did spend some time as a student in Manchester. One thing a lot of people complain about it the price of common goods, daily items. In the immediate area you typically get convenience stores and local shops. While fresh local produce is wonderful, it is expensive.

What you should look into is how to get cheap transport (season tickets, railcards and so on) to places with supermarkets, as I've known a number of people save considerable sums of money this way, particularly young families. The lower price of food (etc.) usually makes up for the cost of travelling there, if you get money off your transport.
