hi, firstly apologies if this is in the wrong section, i have a question about returning goods to a shop, my son bought a cover for the handbrake in his car, on the packaging it says universal rather than giving a list of cars it will fit, the staff didnt give any advice as to what cars it might fit, when we got home and tried fitting the new cover it wouldnt fit, when we returned to the shop they wouldnt give a refund because the packaging was open and when i pointed out it was described as universal and we had to open it to discover it didnt fit they said universal doesnt mean it will fit every car, so now we have a handbrake cover that doesnt fit. any advice would be greatly apreciated.

It sounds like your statutory rights have been breached as the product is not as described. Most reasonable people would agree with you, unless there was something on the packet defining "universal" in more detail.
