Last Tuesday I put my car in for an MOT. During the emmisions test the mechanic revved the car to full revs, this resulted in a loud noise from the engine. The mechanic switched the engine off then restarted it, the noise was still there. Then I was informed that they couldn't continue with the MOT as quote ' something was wrong with the engine'. On investigation the timing belt was found to be slack I was then assued that no damage would have been caused and all that was required was a new belt. Two days later I recieved a phone call saying that there was valve damage. Who is responsible for the repair costs ? garage says I am. The belt was still within the manufacturers recomended parameters. i.e. Time and mileage limits.

I think it would be unfair to expect the garage to fix this it doesn't seem reasonable as it was probably just a coincidence.
