It is old news that the banks have claimed £400 million pounds from dormant accounts, but I believe a condition of this was that they set up a system to get your money if you find an old bank book or the like. The Building Societies Association, the British Bankers' Association (BBA), and National Savings and Investments (NS&I) have set up a site to help you:

I applied for this a while back and recently received notification through that they could not find any of my money anywhere...

I was hoping that maybe I'd misplaced £500,000 somewhere and that I could be reunited with it this way...

The whole process took about 6 weeks from start to finish for me.
