Furniture Durability

In early 2002 we had some bespoke fitted wardrobes and ancillary furniture supplied and installed by a local bedroom specialist.

Now some 8 years later we have a major problem where the furniture is delaminating (i.e. the surface colour/woodgrain layer has separated from the MDF substrate). In places the whole surface layer has nearly all separated from the MDF.

We have contacted the original supplier who have verbally acknowledged this is a known fault with certain furniture from this time and they have subsequently changed their supplier.

In our opinion this is a manufacturing defect and therefore the supplier is liable for the cost of repair or replacement. The furniture is still in excellent condition (i.e. not battered around chipped etc) further enhancing the fact that this is a manufacturing defect.

Having paid around £3000 for "quality" furniture we would have expected far better durability (exceeding 15 years). It does make us wonder why we didnt save 80% and buy cheaper furniture from the likes of Argos.

We are struggling to get any fair response from the supplier at the moment and fear we may end up having to seek legal advice, and therefore would appreciate any advice on our likely legal position and rights in this case

Many thanks - Richard
