Default bad workmanship

I had some gates made back in May 2007, after about 2 1/2 years they would not shut as they dropped in one corner, i called the joiner who made them and he came out and repaired them...since then they have gone again, i paid over 1000.00 for them, although there was no contract,i must have some sort of leverage to get the joiner back out to repair them as he does not reply to any calls/e-mails or recorded mail. How do I stand?
