Default which liabilities apply to my case?

hi,

i borrowed a ladder from my neightbour which he had bought in a DIY store. When i used the ladder, to change a rofe tile, a step broke and i serious injured my right arm. I couldnt work for 4 weeks.
What can i do now?
I would like to read me a bit up on the supject before i inquire a solicitor, but the different laws, regulations etc confuse me too much. Therefore, i have the questions, which civil and maybe criminal liabilities apply to my case?

thx a lot, rgds ma
