Angry Orange PAYG phone

HI
Hope someone can help me! On sunday my daugher and I went to purchase a phone from the Orange shop in Durham. We picked out a phone and asked to look at it, as i am partially deaf we asked about the speaker volume control, the sales assistant told us to look in the book and that all mobile phone volumes were the same, my daughter found it and we asked if we could try it to make sure it was loud enough, she told us we couldnt until it was activated. We bought the phone thinking we could return it if it was not right! Upon getting home we found it was not loud enough for me. The next day we returned to the shop but were told we could not return it! The staff were very unhelpful, another customer in the shop told us to phone customer services which we did but were told no returns!
Do i have any chance of a refund or exchange under sale of goods act as the phone does not meet the requirements i asked for?
