Having just been through some of the problems they discussed, it is a tricky one. There is no logical reason why the nation should respect 'inheritance', and not use people’s own funds to provide their care in old age, but it then hooks into the old arguments about the lack of incentive to save and strive to build wealth. The worst aspect of the care system was the acknowledgement that those who pay privately are subsidising to a high level, publicly funded care places. I am afraid that despite my strong belief in the public welfare system, a belief that is being challenged more and more by abuse of that system, I do baulk at my parents hard-earned income being used in this way, especially when, as we now know, decisions on such matters are made by people who have feathered their own nests fully and will no doubt have hidden funds away so that they will never lose out in such a way. I would rather my so-called inheritance went to a charity of my parents choosing. |
