Question Epson AIO Printer-how long should it last?

Hi - hopefully I can get some sensible answers from you guys, having read the threads you seem to be the people to ask

OK - bought a new Epson AIO - print/scan/copy/fax in Staples September 2008 together with an extended Warranty.

May 2009 - item replaced with identical new item as putting in a new ink cartridge made it stop printing (yes it had that little use that it was 8 months before first cartridge needed replacing).

Not sure if that was under Epson or Staples warranty.

New replacement printer registered with Epson and shows as new May 2009.

Printer jammed (not a paper jam) just said so when to tech help at Epson who told me to visit their authorised repair centre who confirmed item should be replaced.

However, upon production of paperwork I was then told that this item was out of Epson Warranty which expired 12 months' after the original purchase, meaning the new printer only had less than a 4 month Warranty from Epson. I have since been told several times that this is a usual happening through 'warranty law' on all sorts of items.

I then took the printer back to Staples who agreed it could be replaced under the extended warranty but I was only given a top amount of £100 to cover a new printer.

My printer was discontinued and a replacement like for like Epson was now £157 (I did pay more than that originally, but as is the way of these things as they become 'old stock' their price is reduced).

I had to settle for an HP printer with no fax facility as this was the nearest in spec. Epson's were more expensive. I also was expected to purchase a new extended warranty.

Now apart from being left with loads of spare ink cartridges, I have lost the ability to fax.

Is this all correct, or do I, or should I have had a better outcome to this situation?

Many thanks for your opinions

All theoretical. First, it depends whether you bought is as a consumer or as a business from Staples.

It is worth reading this about extended warranties:

I personally don't think they are worth it.

They are correct about the warranty expiring after the original purchase. This is not warranty law, but the terms of the warranty.

You could have made a claim under the Sale of Good Act assuming you bought it as a consumer. This is a good case study:

Many thanks - I will read those suggested threads. I did buy as a single consumer and not as a business. The entire print out from the 2nd printer shows very little use, as did the use of the first printer so I am going to get in touch with Epson and see what their initial response is and take it from there.

Again, many thanks

I think there is little you can do as you have accepted the HP printer as the remedy. Not sure why you had to take out an extended warranty on that.
