Default Buying Second Hand Cars

IS it a good idea to buy a second hand car off a dealer instead of buying one privately from a private listing?
The dealership cars are substantially more expensive. Is it worth it?
I understand that you are getting some peace of mind by going to a dealer, as you often get a warranty. But it seems like their prices are a lot higher than if you were to buy privately.

Anyone have any experience on this. Or any good tips of what to consider when weighing up your options for a second hand car deal?
Thanks, Gar

Hello Gar,

It is not just the warranty, which some don't provide, if the car goes wrong you are covered by your statutory rights. If you buy from a private seller and it goes wrong it is just bad luck. Some rogue dealers will pretend to be private sellers.

Make sense?

Best wishes

Tony

Hi Tony,

Thanks. Yes, it makes a lot of sense. For a little extra cash you get a lot of extra safety guarantees. If you go private it's a bit like playing Russian roulette unless you really understand the mechanics of a car.
That's an interesting point you make that some rogue dealers sell privately. Hadn't anticipated that at all.

I've been reading up on it online. There are a lot of factors to consider.

But it's worth taking the time and trying to make a careful and informed decision. Going with a dealership definitely appears to be the safer choice.

Thanks again
