Disappointed with company on ebay

Hi, I bought a sony laptop top cover from a shop on ebay it stated that it was in excellent condition. Paid my money and got free p & p . When received, it was damaged, parts were broken and sheared off and no fittings. I phoned the company and was told to send back at my cost then would get refund less P & P. Can they do this - keep the cost of sending it to me in the first place from the refund. They can't replace the item as they don't have any more of the same stock. Help please. I would be very grateful for any information as it cost £2-99 to send it to me and it is going to cost me £2-99 to send it back so will lose £5-98 from my refund
