Most people do not realise that when they shop online from a UK retailer they have additional consumer protection and unfortunately that also includes the traders.

Online purchases are covered by the Distance Selling Regulations (DSR) which provide shoppers with a seven day cooling off period.  This is because you the purchaser has not had an opportunity to see the goods in person and it gives you the opportunity to send it back without giving a reason and without paying any spurious admin fees.

It is worth checking that these rights are mentioned in the retailers terms and conditions and also check that a phone number, e-mail address and postal address are provided – these are also DSR requirements.

These protections are a great reason to buy from a UK retailer and if you are spending over £100 consider using your credit card to give your self even more protection from the Consumer Credit Act.

There are exceptions to the seven day cooling period for perishable good such as flowers and computer software, music and films that have been opened.
