Today I received a call from Kevin. The call was from outside the UK - probably India. Kevin said he was from Microsoft and that they had received an error report on my computer. Asked if my computer was running slowly.

This is a scam. Kevin will ask you to go to a website and then ask if they can access your computer. In order to "fix it". They charge you to "fix it" more importantly they can hold your computer to ransom if you don't pay.

They ask for payment via credit card. If you have fallen victim you should immediately contact your credit card company and have the card cancelled. You should get your computer cleaned for spyware.

Last week a person operating the same scam contacted my 89 year old mother in law. They are calling thousands of people in the UK. Criminals don't care who they hurt.

Top Tips:

Microsoft doesn't follow-up error reports on individuals computer.
Microsoft doesn't offer a service over the phone to help improve your computer performance.
