Having spent the last couple of days being thoroughly inconvenienced by the train strike, it's led me to wonder about consumer rights on the railways. Fpr example, say I had booked seats for a train journey today that then did not happen due to the strike - would I be entitled to a refund, replacement service or compensation? Also I believe that if your train is late by more than a certain amount of time, you're allowed to claim compensation - has anyone ever done this?

Hi GG,

I used to travel a lot between London and Manchester on Virgin Trains and before the service was improved the trains were often over an hour late, which is the threshold. Many of the conductors would actually hand out the forms and if I remember rightly you can claim 10% of the cost back. They usually give out free drinks and snacks too. I have done it a few times.
