How long should a roof last?

We had an extension built on out house just over 2 years ago. During the last winter large amounts of the cement from the ridge tiles on the new part of the room have crumbled, to the point where the ridge tiles now need to be repaired.

The old part of the roof is still fine and shows no sign of any such damage.

When contacting the builder he states this is because of the bad winter and claims the frost probably weakened the mortar and it is not his fault ( he put the roof on in October ).

Although he claims he will make good some of the damage on a "good will" basis, I am concerned he will now bodge it and not make a proper repair. He states that after this good will repair he will not be liable for any more repairs.

What's my position? Surely a roof should last more than 2 and a bit years?

Any advice appreciated.
