I think it is well past time that this practice was stopped. I know that at the moment, you can opt to be included only on the "limited" census register that local authorities hold, and not on the version that they sell to advertisers. But I don't think that's common knowledge, and the difference between the "limited" and the full version is not well explained on the census form. Census data should only be used for administering elections and planning council services - not for selling people things!

Absolutely, it would be quite interesting to do a Freedom of Information request to find out how much they actually made from this.
