I think all these things are basically a con, surely it is just detergent.

A bottle of detergent costs less than a pound. I bet you can't tell the difference

I may be a bit late with replying to this, you've probably bought it already.

The description states it's acid free, which means it's little more than a specialised detergent. Fairy liquid is actually quite strong and reasonable at removing grease etc and so will probably do a similar job.

Normally to clean my wheels I use Meguiars Hot Rims, but it is much more expensive, £7.99 meguiars.co.uk/cgi-bin/specwd.pl?pc=G9524&tp=0

It is acid based and should only be left on for 10-20 seconds per use, but strips off brake dust really well - normally you'd need to scrub to remove a bad build up of brake dust which can stratch the alloy.
