I am actually old enough to remember a man coming around door-to-door, sharpening knives - brilliant! Now it is really hard to find a knife sharpener, and I need scissors, and rotary cutters doing regularly as I cut fabric all day long.
I investigated the tinfoil theory and it is somewhat discredited on the basis of steel being so hard that tinfoil won't affect it. However, as paper cutting dulls the rotary blade instantly, (you try having a headteacher as a husband) it is worth a try. I did come across this though

and I am definitely going to try the method out on my old pinking shears, which I haven't used,(been able to use) for years, because of their dull blades. I will report back!
