Is there a time limit on how long a deposit will be held for?

I placed a £1000 deposit for a bed (last year) and started saving the rest
(£3,500.00). When i returned to the shop recently with the money they had sold the bed and said that they did not have to return my deposit - is this correct?

Hi VictoriaP,

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. What does the paperwork say?

In principle traders are only allowed to keep a reasonable amount to compensate for economic loss they cannot profit from deposits. £1000 sounds steep.

....and if they sold the bed their losses must be nil, I interpret that as meaning only when you pay a deposit then cancel the purchase would they be entitled to keep any of it.

I did the same thing with the Co-op a few years ago, they eventually phoned me to say they needed the bed removing from the warehouse so we had it delivered, I think this is a reasonable action for them to take.
