My wife and I went into a Comet store today to buy a particular refridgerator. We found what we wanted on display. A sales assistant said he'd check stock availability. He came back and said there were none in stock; we could come back on Thursday to pick one up, or they would deliver one to us for £20.00.
I said we'd be happy to buy the display model, which the assistant had told us had been on display less than a week. The assistant said he was not permitted to let us have the display model. I expressed surprise, and referred to the Sale of Goods Act, which I believed gave us a right to buy an item displayed for sale.
The assistant checked with the manager. They refused to sell us the display item.
Who is right?

Even if Chutpah is right (which I'm sure he is) why can't you buy items on display? It drives me nuts when you've been looking for something for a really long time and finally locate it only to find the only one is the one they have on display and they're not prepared to sell it.
