We have just bought a car that broke down and had to be towed after 7 miles of driving it and we just want to know our position.
We saw the car advertised on Autotrader under a Dealer (listed as trade). When we got there we tested the car and all seem fine - when we went to pay another person in the room said it was his car and the garage was selling it on his behalf??
We agreed a price and paid for the car with a credit card that went through the main dealers terminal.
The V5 has a business name on it but I'm not sure if its the dealer or the other person.
The car is currently in the garage being assessed on the cost of repair - the AA who towed us home said it looked like the radiator and fuel filter had gone (we had total loss of acceleration but no warning lights/messages), he also said that this was a known scam in the area.
So what we want to know is is this classed as a private sale or a dealer sale as it went through his payment terminal?
Also we part exchanged the car so we are thinking if we start complaining they may start 'Finding faults' on the car we exchanged with them.
If the cost is not too much we were thinking of just sorting it out ourselves.
