My son paid £700 for a brand new laptop from Novatech in Dec 2014 which stopped working recently (6 months after 3 year warranty expired). Novatech say that it cannot be repaired because motherboard no longer available.

In Novatech's terms and conditions they say:

"Due to the portable nature of these products, we would consider the life expectancy of a laptop to be (three) 3 years."

This came as a shock as I have an old laptop (nearly 10 years old) still going strong and running very fast with Linux.

I always believed that because they were portable, laptops were made tougher to withstand possible knocks.

Anyhow my issue is: I thought that the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (now replaced by the Consumer Rights Act 2015) provided me with some sort of protection after the expiration of the warranty (up to 6 years).

Are Novatech in breach of the Sale Of Goods Act 1979 by stating in their terms and conditions that laptops have a life expectancy of 3 years. And please bear in mind that some of their laptops can cost up to nearly £2000!

Thanks for any advice.
