I currently have painters doing the front of my house.

They verbally quoted me £600 but did not put this in writing, as I asked.

They have started, whilst I as at work, and I am unhappy about the work so far. They have not rubbed down the old paint, which was peeling gloss paint, but have just gone over it with masonry paint. I raised my concerns when they put the first coat on and was told that it was just a prime coat which would show up any defects.

I am going to stop them tomorrow as I am concerned that this is not the way to 'paint' woodwork. I expected it to be glossed etc. Can I refuse to pay them?

I believe so, if you have not signed any contract. but best to raise the concern to their manager. or you could talk to them again and tell them how you want it done. if it's still the same then cancel the service. You'll just be wasting cash if you end up having sloppy work
