Good public relations can be very important to small businesses, particularly those who have little or no money to spend on advertising. Small businesses are typically local, so the local press and/or radio is a good place to start. Remember, they need content to their broadcasts or papers and there is only so much people will read about petty crime and cats stuck up trees. You are in a way doing them a favour by having them write about your business or interview you.
It might require a bit of schmoozing on your part to make the right contacts but it is far cheaper than paying to be an advertiser in the paper or on the radio, and may well get more exposure than an advert in the middle of dozens of other adverts ever could.
