Does anybody know how do you tell if a railway sleeper has tar inside? There sometimes seems to be no way to tell from the outside appearance. I've heard that a sleeper that contains tar would be heavier that a sleeper that doesn't (obvious I suppose), but I can't start weighing sleepers. I would love to strip a couple down and use them for shelving in my house.
I couple of years back I used two railway sleepers in my garden. They looked brilliant, though it wasn't until a couple of months after they were laid when the sun hit them that tar started to seep out of one of them and it had to be taken out.
