We purchased a tan coloured suite (1 sofa and 2 armchairs) made by Bardi from Barker's of Northallerton. There are just two of us at home, both in our 70s, of normal weight and the furniture gets normal usage, certainly not heavy use. The furniture cost several thousand pounds and we expected it would be of good quality and last us many years. However the first suite that was delivered was of completely unacceptable quality in several respects including mismatched colourings in the panels, ridges in the cushions and other things. We rejected it. A replacement was eventually supplied but it too had problems. We ended up doing as good a job as we could, with Barker's cooperation, as a mix and match operation between the two suites.

After three years light usage we noticed that white cracks were appearing in the cushions. (It is now four years old). It looked as though the dye had not been applied all the way through the hide. We contacted Barker's who in turn contacted Bardi. Bardi said that because the suite had not been cleaned and fed every six months they would accept no responsibility. To our recollection this requirement had never been mentioned when we bought the suite.

We have previously had a much cheaper leather suite which lasted in excellent condition for very many years without any problem with the leather. Considering the thousands of pounds we paid for the Bardi suite we expected much better quality and a longer lasting suite.

Barker's recommended that we go to The Furniture Clinic to have the problem attended to, at our expense of course.

I realise that it is almost certainly too late to do anything about this now, but nevertheless I think it worthwhile to let people know of our experience.

Update. Everyone needs to be aware that Bardi do not dye the leather completely through, at least not in our case, and I would imagine this to be their standard practice. They simply spray the top colour, the colour you see, on to a cream coloured base leather, obviously resulting in only a very thin coating of colour. This means that it is very easy to wear off and if any cracks develop, as they did with us, the cream undercoat shows through very visibly. And because of the processes they use these unsightly cream colours can not be eradicated or hidden using dye or other colouring agent. We feel cheated by Bardi and would never consider buying any other product from them.

Thanks for the update on this situation with Bardi
