Actually on reflection I think Orange just gave me an allowance of 250Mb but I have never come close to that so it is effectively unlimited. Although with iplayer now available it might have an impact on performance. I have another year on my contract, but if I were looking now I would also consider the new HTC Touch HD as well as the N97 and iphone.

Hi Matt,

Why do you hate the N96 is it the bulkiness? I have had an N95 for many years - I only really use it as a satnav now, but the latest firmware update is fantastic. When I first got it they had me standing out side waving it around in the air to get a fix... this is not the case now.

its just the same as my n95's i get heavy use out of my phones and they didn't last very long i had 15 of them. and n96 i got on the day they came out iv had 7. orange have sent me some faulty units but other times its little things like the ringtones just stoped working. only a few days after having them replaced.

orange say its a software issue but its a pain in the ass.

Make sure you tell them you are swapping when you phone to renew. They will pretty much give you whatever you want!!

I too am on Orange and really want the Iphone but as it is still unavailable without paying a fortune. Having a look at some alternatives and one which really caught my eye is the Nokia 5800!! Looks very interesting.

Hi all, I work for Orange, I can confirm that the IPhone is definatly coming, but as yet the dates are unknonwn for release, we were expecting it to arrive in August, but Orange has been working hard with O2 to get this contract, finally Orange has! So far as I can read from the details at work on our info pages, its here for xmas. But have contacted O2 and apparently their contract with Apple doesnt end till Jan 2010.... So not sure whats going on, if Orange are just hoping that its here for xmas or not.
But thats not all, apparently overhearing a manager who is realing out to some of our employees who are currently in training for when we get the Iphone, as it will need its own "call que" that the Iphone will only be available on certain higher value talk plans and that the adverage monthly spend will be taken into it! So, you people out there holding on for this Iphone, may not be intitled to it!! Plus, stocks will be limited...
Also, acording to Apple, O2 will still have the winning lead in the Iphone, hence why we are only getting the 3GS, so if Apple deside to bring out a new IPhone, O2 will get it first, then Orange following a year or so later, depending on how long o2 has that contract with the new phone with Apple.
My probably best advice to those upgrading when the Iphone arrives is first off speak to upgrades, see if they will offer it on a tarriff that suits you, dont let them talk you into getting it on a tarriff you cant afford!! if not, ask to speak to the retenstions team (disconnections) and 9 times out of ten they will offer you a whole better deal than upgrades! sounds daft, but thats what you might have to do. Personally, I have 2 months left of my contract with o2, and Im sticking with o2, as they offer me a great deal everytime I upgrade, and already have spoken to Orange to see what they can offer me as an employee... I kindly told sales that I would be sticking with O2! and they tried to sell me something else, like free wap or something, but already get that anyway!! they even offered to buy me out of my o2 contract!!
I have noticed in our systems we are getting some applications/products that we can add only for the Iphone, that was about a week ago, anything new like the IPhone/new phones etc, come out we can put a 6 week time gap on it from when its applied to our systems to when the phone comes out, so that gives you a rough idea of a time when we will get it....
Feel free to ask any questions... Insider@Orange

I have just bought an iphone on O2 and moved from Orange. It was a good deal and a nice piece of kit the thing that worries me is the fact that I had to sign a two year contract - I hope it lasts that long.

The other thing I worry about is the 02 data network - is it as good as O2s

Thanks for the info - insider@orange.

all my advice is, be careful the apps that you download, only download from safe and trusted sites, have come across many of times not with the iphone but other phones where stuff has been downloaded and its conflicted with the phone software and caused big problems. Remember, phones these days are like computers, someone out there is clever enough to design mobile viruses! Its a case of time! If they arent already out there! Play it safe dude!

Yes I have heard the stories about these phones going into coma mode, it was on BBC Watchdog the month before last and the Apps were blamed. I think Apple are better than others as they validate all the applications.

I'm currently on a £30-a-month (18 month) contract with orange and i've got about 7-8 months left on my contract. I rang orange to see if they would let me transfer to a £35-a-month iPhone contract (includng paying about £175 for a 32gb iPhone) but they said it would not be possible and i'd have to wait until my current contract is over.

Does this seem crazy to anyone else? They stand to make quite a bit more money from me than they already are, yet they refuse to take my hard earned (!) money from me.

JMoore. I've been googling around to get a bit of info and have seen a few people saying this.

I actually spoke to Orange a number of months ago and was advised to take my contract down to the £15 a month tariff (this may not suit you if you're making alot of calls) and then buyout my contract with them and start afresh with a new iphone contract.

I've held off just transferring to O2 to get an iphone as I'm a bit loyal to Orange but I'll definitely be telling them I'd be happy to move if they can't do me a deal of sorts...

Thanks Laudrup1,

Yeah I'm quite loyal to orange too, not sure why now! When I first enquired about an iPhone they told me that it "shouldn't" matter that i've already got a contract, but apparently it does now!

I'm going to an Orange shop on saturday to see if they can't help me out. Might threaten them with taking my business to O2 after my current contract runs out... see if that kick-starts them!

Wee update for you too. I'm just off the phone with Orange upgrades.

My contract's actually up in April (earliest I'm due a contract is in January) and I enquired about the £35 a month tariff on the 16gig 3gs phone for 24 months with an £87 for the phone. As I expected, there's absolutely no give on those prices at all. Fair enough.

I was told that it'd be £63 odds to buy out my contract just now. I then asked if they'd be willing to wave any of that for 12 years loyalty and the girl (who was very helpful for info) said that that's the two things they can't do.

Deals on iphones and deals on disconnection fees. Because it's contract specific, it's not something they can offer deals on. It's what I expected to hear in all honesty.

I asked if speaking to disconnections would make any difference and she said no (she was actually on upgrades as overtime and normally worked in disconnections) it was two things they couldn't budge on.

If it had been a different phone I was upgrading too or I was out of contract, it'd have been different.

I thanked her for her time and said I'd go and call O2 and see what they said and then phone Orange back.

I'm the same as you, I've got loyalty to Orange but no real idea why. The one thing that is stopping me is the "hassle" of transferring to a different company and getting your PUK code etc and having a temporary number for a few days. It's not a big deal but one thing to keep me where I am.

What I wish I had done now is asked, rather than give me a discount on my contract settlement was if they'd credit my account with any sort of monetary fee to offset the disconnection fee.

I plan to phone back and speak to disconnections anyway (despite what she told me) on the off chance that there's a bit of give there.

In all honesty, I'll likely end up staying with Orange but it's worth trying to get something off them.

*edit*

updated to say that having spoken to a dude in disconnections, he says you can't buy out your contract to use that as a way of getting an upgrade. He said it'd never been something he'd heard done before. I find that strange as I'm sure there must've been tonnes of people in my position at one point or another.

I can buy out the contract to get the PAK code to go to o2 but can't buy it out to upgrade on Orange. Told him it looked like they'd just lost a customer then and he said "seems that way, sorry about that"

If I'm buying out my contract, the number (which I've got to keep) effectively becomes redundant to them and I'd have 30 days to use the PAK code at another service provider.

Now I'm wondering if I just wait until the 1st of January and upgrade then (taking what is effectively a 27 month contract) as it's only a matter of weeks away.

Seems a strange situation / business plan for them.
