Hi folks, Hope someone can advise me on what to do.....
I attempted to log on to my online banking the other day and I was denied accesss so I called abbey to explain and they let me know that I was already logged in which i was not so we agreed to cancel all my cards/online access etc. Never thought anything else of it and the next day i went into my branch to ask for a statement and a cheque had been paid in from a bank 300 miles away for over £3000. My bank said it will take 4 weeks to chase up why this has happened and they said it was probably a mistake but i reported it to my banks fraud department who put my account under investigation. Tonight on my way home from work my partner ( joint account) printed off a mini statement and to our shock another cheque has been deposited into my account for over £3000 from another bank over 300 miles away also.
I called fraud at the bank - spoke to my branch and they say they cannot freeze my account as no money has been taken out. All i wanted was my account frozen to this is all sorted out.....
At my first contact with my branch - they told me the cheque had been paid in via 'Drop' letterbox and they showed me a faxed copy of the envelope which had all my details butthe names/addresses were blank. I have no idea about the second cheque until i visit my bank tomorrow...
By the way - part of my job is to intercept all those scamming phising e-mails so I am very security aware.
Any ideas what this scam will be? anyone have any advice incase i make any mistakes.
the first cheque is due to clear on the 15th Dec and i am scared that they (scammers) will take the money out (somehow)and I will be left to foot the bill. My bank do not seem to be able to shed any light but they said I will only be covered up to £500 if this is a scam. If I was scammd out of £6000 then I would be chased i presume for the remainder - I would have to prove it was fraud before i would be in the clear.....
I do not want this money - I have reported it to the bank - all i want is it out my account and my account closed which no one at the abbey is able to do for some reason.
Can anyone help me out with ideas - what would you do and any one aware of such a scam?
I plan to have a sit in at my branch tomorrow morning 9am and im not leaving until I have a signed letter from the manager that I am not responsible for any money loss...
Should i report it to the police?
Many thanks in advance...
