That’s a legitimate claim as long as you are using the item for the purpose for which it was intended. This is the principle of fitness for purpose. There is no point claiming that paint thinner has had adverse effects if it is not being used as paint thinner! Similarly, if you are commissioning the manufacture of a product and do not specify the purposes for which it will be used you will have no recourse if it fails to live up to your expectations.
Your Statutory Rights
- How do you measure quality?
- How long should it last?
- Is the guarantee worth the paper it’s written on?
- I bought it from a bloke down the pub
- Rights when knowingly buying damaged goods
Common Complaints
- They say I’ve taken ownership so it’s my responsibility
- Do shops have to give me my money back?
- The shop doesn’t want to know, they say it is the manufacturer’s responsibility.
- It’s second hand – do I have any rights?
We ordered a kitchen and now it’s been part fitted we’ve discovered it was measured wrong so some of the cupboards do not fit correctly we’ve had to move pipes also as they wernt taken into account. Can I ask for the kitchen to be returned?

strange one – but would welcome any help. My aged mother wanted a portable DVD player to take on the coach when she goes on trips, her friends bought her a portable DVD player from Currys as a leaving gift from work (47 years and left at aged 83)
However, the Portable player must be plugged into the mains, meaning it is only portable as far as having mains electricity,
There is no internal battery, the DVD dies as soon as it is removed from the electric, Currys are arguing that it is portable, but my argument is, that everything can be sold as portable, if it can be moved into another room, she already has a normal house DVD so this one is useless
I bought a Titan Strimmer from Screwfix about 3 years ago. Unfortunately I lost the receipt. I went in numerous times to their Store to tell them about it but they said I had no receipt so there was nothing they could do. The strimmer cuts out after starting which means I have paid over 120 pounds for an item which has never worked. Whenever I ring up other Garden implement suppliers to ask if they would try to fix it, they say what is the make and whenever I say Titan, they say no way. Titan is a trade name of Screwfix(Kingfisher) and with no after care I am just ignored by Screwfix and Kingfisher. Am I just with it. I will have to buy another one but definitely not through Screwfix. John Watt
I had a power steering issue with my car.
The garage sent the part away for refurbishment it has broken down 4 times since I eventually got my car back.
The garage has had the car more than I have lately.
I need my car working as I want to sell it .
Where do I stand?

I bought trousers and realised after on wearing that they had no front belt loops. So the belt cannot hold up the front of the trousers. The retailer refused a return but I think they are not fit for purpose–is this correct?
Hi George, I think that the retailer is right as belt loop are not a standard feature of trousers – unless they were described as having belt loops.
I purchased a laptop from pc world in September and from day one it has not been right . The camera doesn’t work properly and is unuseable. When the lap top is plugged into power the internet drops so much that I cannot use it for college zoom online . I have been through with curries support centre reinstalling and updating. I have spoken to hp 4 times and they have done similar things but these 2 things still not working. For a £500 laptop very poor. What are my customer rights. I feel it’s not fit for purpose. This is affecting my college course and work as I need to use zoom and plug the laptop into the mains but it’s so bad I can hear the other person and I freeze.
